Ⅰ. “Herakles and the Sirens”

“Herakles and the Sirens.” That was the title of episode3.

In Greek mythology, “Herakles” strangled a lion with his bare hands and crushed a crab with his feet, so “Herakles” in the title indicates Yakushiji, who is muscular like Heracles.

“The Sirens,” also derived from Greek mythology, indicates Karina Komiya because “The Sirens” has a magical voice that lures people to the calamity like Karina enchanting people with songs.

Suitable for the title, Episode3 was about the election campaign between Yakushiji(“Herakles”) and Karina(“the Siren”), and it goes on entangled with The speculation of Bifrost and the Inspectors.

Episode 3 had a lot of valuable information, so this time I would like to mainly organize the data and subsidiary analysis of Bifrost, Kei, and Arata.

Ⅱ. “Yakushiji vs. Karina” Election Campaign Summary

First of all, the story of the election campaign for “Yakushiji vs. Karina Komiya” is getting complicated, so I would like to organize about it.

ⅰ. The root of the election campaign is “Advocating immigrants vs. Anti-immigrants.”

f:id:zaikakotoo:20191110215321j:plain

First of all, I would like to confirm that the basis of the election campaign is “Advocating immigrants vs. Anti-immigrants.”

In short, Yakushiji is advocating immigrants, and Komiya states anti-immigrants.

The Yakushiji camp seems to aim to accept more refugees and respect the rights of immigrants more than before.

On the other hand, the Komiya camp seems to aim to treat Japanese people better than immigrants, as she preached “The Neighbor Policy” in her speech.

And, as I will confirm later, this struggle for “Advocating immigrants vs. Anti-immigrants” is involved with the thoughts of Bifrost and the Inspectors.

ⅱ. In the episode of episode 3, Karina Komiya was put at a disadvantage.

f:id:zaikakotoo:20191110215428j:plain

In episode 3, Lee Aki, the secretary of Yakushiji, was killed, and as a result, Karina Komiya's approval rating declined because people thought the Karina camp caused the murder.

The murder case seems to be caused by 2nd Inspector, Haruki Enomiya, who appeared in the third episode, but why did he do that? Does he oppose the Komiya camp, or does every Inspector resist them?

And how about Bifrost? Which is their position, Advocating immigrants or Anti-immigrants?

ⅲ. Are Bifrost welcome immigrants or undesirable Immigrants?

The conclusion is that (for now) Bifrost is anti-immigrants because, in the previous episodes, Bifrost has acted to make immigrants disadvantageous.

If so, the fact which the 2nd Inspector, whom Bifrost supported, made to kill Lee Aki and drops the support of Karina Komiya(who states anti-immigrants) seems to contradict that Bifrost opposes immigration.

Why did Bifrost do such behavior as if cutting their own throat?

ⅳ. What is the reason for the death of Lee Aki?

There are two possible reasons.

The killing of Lee Aki will eventually lead to an increase in the support rate of Komiya.
There is a congressman who can advance the Bifrost “game” by killing Lee Aki.
From the remark of the congressman, ―“I wonder whose down card attacked the Yakushiji campaign”― it is assumed that the mastermind of the incident is someone in the congressman.

If Lee Aki were killed with the consent of the risk of reducing Komiya’s approval rating, it would be in the interests of the mastermind.

“the interests” would be the profit of BifrostーKomiya elected to the governor of Tokyoー or it of a congressman ―won the “game” of Bifrostー, so that is the reason for killing Lee.

That’s all for the election campaign.

Also, in episode 3, the mystery of Bifrost and inspectors trying to control the election campaign was gradually revealed.

Let’s consider the secret of Bifrost and inspectors.

III. About Bifrost

ⅰ. Can the congressman choose his / her identity freely?

f:id:zaikakotoo:20191110215446j:plain

At the beginning of episode 3, there was a saying, “what cards are you living on now?”. The question is seemingly odd, but the answer was in the story.

The hint is in the scene where Shizuka Homura suddenly became the hotel owner. In other words, the answer for “what cards are you living on now?” would be “I’m living as a hotel owner.”

That is, it is considered that congressmen can choose a social status.

The hotel worker’s remarks indicate that the owner of the hotel suddenly changed. It suggests that Bifrost is quite powerful in controlling society so that they can suddenly take someone’s social standing away.

Thus, the “cards” that reword for winning the “game” of Bifrost are not money, but such a social scale.

ⅱ. Is the gift of Bifrost’s “game” social identity?

f:id:zaikakotoo:20191110215509j:plain

“PSYCHO-PASS 3” episode3 ©サイコパス製作委員会

At the beginning of Episode 3, there is a dialogue saying, “You must have a good hand.”

“You must have a good hand” can be interpreted as meaning that Shizuka Homura(one of the congressmen) has just gained the hand (“cards”). In other words, the reason why he has the “good hand” is he won the previous “game,” I guess.

Accordingly, I assume that Bifrost’s “game” prizes are of social identities, such as a hotel owner.

ⅲ. Bifrost is the organization that controls society by the backdoor

Bifrost would be an organization that manages the nation by the backdoor.

Of course, we can easily imagine that, but we can also guess the scale and history of Bifrost.

First, from the line that “It could easily alert Sibyl to our existence again,” you can suspect that Bifrost may not yet clearly be recognized by Sibyl.

Considering that Bifrost enjoys the incidents that occur in Japan, we can suspect that Bifrost conducts mainly in Japan, and they can act the only background.

ⅳ. How long has Bifrost been working?

f:id:zaikakotoo:20191110215532j:plain

“PSYCHO-PASS 3” episode3 ©サイコパス製作委員会

You can also roughly estimate how many years ago, Bifrost started their “game.”

First, the case of ep3 was “Case No. 10785”, and that of ep1 was “Case No. 10779”, so you can see that “case” will come in a short span.

If an incident comes in the span of 1 case par1 day to 1 every 2 days, we can guess that Bifrost would have been playing a “game” from 29 to 59 years ago.

The establishment of the Sibyl System was about 60 years ago, the Sibyl System became in the stable period from the third period to 40 years ago, and the 1st season of “PSYCHO-PASS” is eight years before.

So, you can guess that Bifrost has been functioning since the establishment of the Sibyl System if it was established 59 years ago. Even if it was new, Bifrost has been working before 1st season of animation.

If you think so, Bifrost has been controlling Japan by backdoor without being aware of Sibyl for a long time.

Of course, depending on the number of the case per day, a large margin of error will be generated. (For example, if there were 2 cases per 1 day, Bifrost would have been operating for about 15 years.)

However, even if the error is significant, it is clear that Bifrost is not a too old association.

Ⅳ. About Kei and Arata

ⅰ. Summary of their new information

f:id:zaikakotoo:20191110215652j:plain

The following is a summary of the new information from the three episodes about Arata and Kei.

  • Arata and Kei commuted the same school
  • Arata and Kei were absent from their vocational school in 2118
  • Arata entered the Public Security Bureau with a recommendation from Tsunemori and Kei from Shimotsuki
  • Akane Tsunemori is “the killer ex-inspector” (from the words of the Enforcer Todoroki)
  • Arata’s mother (Seiko) chose euthanasia due to serious illness in 2108, and his father (Atsushi) committed suicide in 2118. Atsushi’s death is a secret matter
  • Kei’s wife (Maiko Meiya Stronskaya) is being treated for visual impairment. Maiko is losing her family as well as Arata and Kei (from the Arata’s saying “Why did Mai, you, and I all have to lose family?”)
  • Kei’s brother: Akira Vasily Ignatov was killed, and the suspect is Arata’s father: Atsushi

This information seems to have solved the reason why the Arata and Kei seem intimately contacted before becoming Inspectors and the depiction that lost the family.

The new point is the fact that the Kei’s brother (= Akira) was killed, and the suspect of the murder is Arata’s father (= Atsushi), plus Atsushi committed suicide.

What exactly happened there?

ⅱ. Atsushi is not suicide ...?

I can guess a little about the father of Arata(Atsushi).

It is speculation that Atsushi is not a suicide, and he became a member of Sibyl.

There are three reasons.

  • Because there is a cut where Atsushi is standing on the brain of Sibyl in OP
  • Because Atsushi’ Atsushi’s suicide is a secret matter
  • As mentioned in my ““Hypothesis 2”” in the previous analysis (for details, see ““PSYCHO-PASS 3”” Episode 2 Impressions and Discussion ““Does Teumesusu Sacrifice?””), Atsushi becomes a member of Sibyl and Tsunemori killed Atsushi ““dressed”” as Bureau Chief of Public Safety.

It may not be so persuasive, but I don’t have other good ideas for the reason why they treated Atsushi’s death as a secret. I think this is the most powerful so far.

ⅲ. Arata suspects Sibyl…?

f:id:zaikakotoo:20191110215723j:plain

“PSYCHO-PASS 3” episode3 ©サイコパス製作委員会

Todoroki “Why did you stop me? The Dominator said to enforce them.”
Arata “We need to exercise human judgment. That’s why the Dominator has a trigger.”

(from “PSYCHO-PASS 3” episode3)

In the middle of episode 3, in a scene where Arata missed the person who assaulted Lee Aki, there was a conversation like the one above.

Why did Arata make such a statement that he doubted Sibyl’s judgment?

I guess there are two possible reasons:

  • Arata know how the Sibyl System truly works
  • Arata has encountered a scene where the Dominator ran wild.

1. Arata know how the Sibyl System truly work

In this case, Arata knows how Sibyl truly works, and he doubts the judgment, so he claimed that “We need to exercise human judgment.”

If so, naturally, a question comes up: why Arata knows the secret of the Sibyl?

I think that’s because Arata’s father(Atsushi) knows about it, and he told Arata.

If I guess so, it makes sense my hypothesis before like:

2. Arata has encountered a scene where the Dominator ran wild.

“A scene where the Dominator ran wild” means like the scene Bureau Chief shoot Kagari in the 1st season.

Considering if that happens with Arata, I assumed seans as follows: Dominator enforced Arata’s father, although he was innocent. Dominator shoots Kei’s brother in spite of his innocence.

I wrote such a scenario because if Arata encountered the death of his close person by running wild Dominator, it is natural that Arata doubts Sybil’s judgment.

ⅳ. Who is holding the Dominator with hand in the OP?

f:id:zaikakotoo:20191110215747j:plain
f:id:zaikakotoo:20191110215739j:plain
“PSYCHO-PASS 3” episode3 ©サイコパス製作委員会

In OP, there is a cut seemingly odd. It is the cut someone holds the Dominator with his or her hand.

Why does he or she hold the muzzle? What does this mean?

I suppose that the hand is Arata’s, and it means his doubt for Sibyl’s judgment.

If so, that makes sense of his statement ー“We need to exercise human judgment.”ー

Ⅳ. The end of “Herakles and the Sirens”

f:id:zaikakotoo:20191110215816j:plain

The Sirens by Gustave Moreau (1885)

In Greek mythology, Herakles and the Siren have a somewhat miserable end.

Herakles suffers from toxic poison and burns himself and dies in flames. The Siren met a person who was not distracted by her song, so she threw himself in the sea and committed suicide.

How will the “Yakushiji vs. Komiya” election campaign end? Will the one be safely the governor of the city, or may the other follow a tragic fate like Greek mythology? We can’t take our eyes off from the end!

Thank you for reading!
