Ⅰ. "Laelaps' calling"

"Laelaps' Calling" by "PSYCHO-PASS 3" ep1©サイコパス製作委員会

ⅰ. "Laelaps" and "the Teumessian fox."

What does the subtitle “Laelaps' calling” mean?

The subtitle “Laelaps' calling” comes from the Greek mythology of an everlasting chase of Laelaps (the dog) and Teumessian (the fox).

Laelaps ―a dog that appears in Greek mythology, destined never to miss any prey― was ordered to catch the Teumessian fox. On the other hand, the fox―destined never to be caught― eats people in the city of Thebes.

Laelaps (the dog) kept chasing the Teumessian fox as if Tom kept tracking Jerry in the famous Disney Show.

This getaway drama, which seemed everlasting, forced to end by the god Zeus. The dog “destined never to miss what she was hunting” and the fox “destined never to be caught” were turned into stones by Zeus and ended their lives without fulfilling their fate―

ⅱ. Who are the Laelaps in “PSYCHO-PASS3”?

In this case, “Laelaps” could be the new Inspector Arata Shindo, Kei Mikhail Ignatov, and the new faces of Enforcers.

Who would be the “Teumessian fox” in this case? Or who is the “God” that “called” Laelaps? And will they follow the destiny of being turned into stones, as in the mythology?

While organizing the information of the 1st episode, I would like to consider what metaphors are hidden in these symbols.

Ⅱ. Laelaps

ⅰ. What is Arata looking at in the first scene?

In this case, “Laelaps” could be the new Inspector Arata Shindo, Kei Mikhail Ignatov, and the new faces of Enforcers.
Who would be the “Teumessian fox” in this case? Or who is the “God” that “called” Laelaps? And will they follow the destiny of being turned into stones, as in the mythology?
While organizing the information of the 1st episode, I would like to consider what metaphors are hidden in these symbols.
In the 1st episode, “Laelaps,” the two new Inspectors Arata Shindo and Kei Mikhail Ignatov, were acting somewhat mysterious.

  • The two seem intimately contacted before becoming Inspectors.
  • Kei’s words such as “At present, your Mental Tracing is all we can rely on. I’ll hold your rope.” suggest that he knows Arata’s abilities more than anyone.
  • Arata saying, “The truth we’re looking for is somewhere much deeper.” etc.

The scene in which Arata and Kei were facing the wall under the sunset is what interested me particularly. When you look at the scene carefully, Arata was facing the Buddhist altar, and Kei was facing a picture of someone placed on top of the furniture.

We can imagine from this that both of them would have lost their relatives.

These indications may mean that they were involved in some incident.

So what is this incident?

ⅱ. "that incident"?

f:id:zaikakotoo:20191027174728j:plain

By "PSYCHO-PASS3" ep1 ©サイコパス製作委員会

I would guess that Arata and Kei would have lost some relatives of “that incident” often mentioned in Arata’s dream and the conversations between enforcers―― described as follows.

  • In Arata’s dream, the radio broadcast that “The Ministry of Welfare has declined to reveal the Psycho-Pass of Ex-Inspector ―― ――, who was arrested for the ―― ―― ―― of Public Safety.”
  • “Hopefully they don’t die in accidents, like before.” said Kazumichi Irie (the young and sporty Enforcer), “Hey, watch your mouth.” replied Tenma Todoroki (the aged and veteran looking Enforcer), “Don’t bring that up again,” said Mao Kisaragi (the cool and sexy Enforcer)
  • “Speaking of unconventional, I hear there was an inspector like that in Unit 1.” said Kei inside the car, and Mao replied, “You mean Ex-Inspector Tsunemori ?” “You know her ?” “No. I didn’t become an enforcer until after that incident. Only Hinakawa has experience working with her.”

In short, this implies that there was a significant “incident” in the past.

Based on the radio broadcast, I made a speculation that Tsunemori retired from the Inspector status because of “that incident.”

According to my interpretation, the radio broadcast would go like this: “The Ministry of Welfare has declined to reveal the Psycho-Pass of Ex-Inspector Akane Tsunemori, arrested for murder of Bureau Chief of Public Safety.”

The plot would be dull if other Inspectors ――not Tsunemori―― would be the one arrested, so I concluded that Tsunemori is the one being referred to.

In any murder case, ordinary people’s Hue would be cloudy.

However, the Hue of Tsunemori is usually clear even though she is involved in any incident, so it would be convincing that The Ministry of Welfare would not reveal the Psycho-Pass of her.

Going back to Arata and Kei, why are they related to “that incident”?

ⅲ. Arata and Kei are bereaved of "that incident"?

The reason why I guess that Arata and Kei are related to "that incident" is that if so, we can explain the various unnatural points described in the 1st episode.
For example,

  • The depiction of Arata facing of a Buddhist altar or Kei looking at the photographs can be explained that they were involved in the same “incident.”
  • The depiction that the two are acquaintances can suggest that they met each other through “that incident.”
  • “The much deeper truth” they are “looking for” is the truth of “that incident.”

Of course, this is only a guess.

However, there is no doubt that the “incident” is an essential event of “PSYCHO-PASS 3”, and the two seeking a more profound “truth” is a fact.

There will be various descriptions about it, so let's keep an eye on what's going to happen next.

ⅳ. Where are the “old dogs.”

By the way, where are the “old dogs”?

The “old dogs” are Ginoza, Kougami, Sugo, and other former members of Unit 1.

My conclusion is that they may be in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

There are several reasons that I thought so

  1. Sugo was invited to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by Hanashiro Frederica in “Sinners of the System Case.2”.
  2. Kogami declared that he would return to Japan in “Sinners of the System Case.3”.
  3. In the 1st episode of “PSYCHO-PASS3”, you can see there is a mark of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the top of Ginoza's communication monitor.
  4. The reason why Shimotsuki said, “Foreign Affairs isn't here.” in an irritated voice, would suggest that “the old dogs” are in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Ⅲ. Teumessian fox

ⅰ“Teumessian fox” = Sasagawa and Yonehara

Sasagawa : “Remember, Yonehara, we swore we wouldn't be sheep. That we'd succeed in this society and become foxes”

(From "PSYCHO-PASS 3" episode 1)

If the “dog” indicates Arata and Kei, the “fox” would be Sasagawa and Yonehara, who are executives of Hyper Transport Company―as seen in the upper dialogue.
The ideal way of life for them is not to be the “sheep,” but the “fox,” which is crafty and profitable. And this would make sense because the “fox” is destined to be chased by the “dog”―

Regarding the fox, Hyper Transport’s accountant, Rick Fellows, was killed, maybe because he was a betrayer of the fox.
The Hyper Transport’s Incident “may not be as deeply involved in the main story, but apparently, the key is “immigration.”

That’s why Rick Fellows’s hidden files were Hyper Transport company’s account books, pay data for thousands of employees, and also the “mortgage management tables.”

ⅱ. Is the mortgage mess foreshadowing?

f:id:zaikakotoo:20191027225914j:plain

By "PSYCHO-PASS3" ep1 ©サイコパス製作委員会

There was a small incident in episode1.
A grandfather named Hitoshi Yatsumata was being threatened by an immigrant named Bazarov Triskov.
Bazaroff, who had rented that room from Yatsumata, paid three years’ rent beforehand, but since Yatsumata failed to invest, the room has been confiscated. Due to this Bazarov urged with anger to return the money.

It seems to be trivial, but in fact, it appears to be related to the Hyper Transport case.
That is (which is only a guess), Hyper Transport Company noticed the number of immigrants and their homes are increasing. So they tried raising money illegally using the mortgage system.
This can be concluded Rick Fellows was killed because he got proof of the fraud.

Another point is that Yonehara and Sasagawa may just be subordinate, and there must be a mastermind, which I call the “wolf.”
Yonehara and Sasagawa, who had dreamed of becoming a “fox,” are just underlings of the “wolf” that belongs to the same Canine family but more violent.

Ⅳ. Wolves

ⅰ. Who is the owner of the business card?

As soon as Enforcers Kisaragi saw a business card with the name “Kouichi Azusawa” and a picture of “Wolf” printed on it, she sneaked it into her pocket.
Who is “Shinichi Azusawa”?

From the ending credits, you can see that “Kenyu Horiuchi” is the voice actor for “Kouichi Azusawa.” And from that voice, you can find that “Kouichi Azusawa” is the man who was taking a selfie with the transport drone, saying, “I’m happy,” the man who had been submitting the video, and the man who takes with Sasagawa on the phone.

We still don’t know the details of him, but there is little information.

ⅱ. The man, Kouichi Azusawa

f:id:zaikakotoo:20191027230025j:plain

By "PSYCHO-PASS3" ep1 ©サイコパス製作委員会

Azusawa and Sasagawa call each other with a slightly different name on the phone.

Azusawa calls Sasagawa “7th Inspector Sasagawa”, and Sasagawa calls Azusawa “1st Inspector Koichi Azusawa”.

The nickname suggests that they seem to form a group of 7 or more people. (May not be related, there are a total of 11 people who color in red ―which seems enemy colorー in the OP)

I’m curious about the word “inspector.” “Inspector” should mean Inspector of the Public Safety Bureau, but Azusawa and Sasagawa are not Inspectors.

From Mr. Azusawa’s phraseology ―“Can you see through my diagram, detectives?”―, we can guess he seems to draw some diagrams.

What is an “inspector”? I want to pay attention to it and other “Inspectors” that will come out.

ⅲ. Another wolf ーAtsushi Shindo―

f:id:zaikakotoo:20191027230019j:plain

By "PSYCHO-PASS3" ep1 ©サイコパス製作委員会

There is another “Wolf”.

That is Arata’s father, Atsushi Shindo.

Here are some clues about him.

  • Atsushi works or worked in the Ministry of Welfare from the Arata’s saying, “Ministry of Welfare, like my dad.”
  • Azusawa’s murmur―“Atsushi’s son, huh?”―suggests that Azusawa and Atsushi are acquainted.
  • The profile shown in the ED image shows Atsushi’s face. And that is the man who stands on the brains of the Sibyl System in OP.
  • As shown in the official HP profile, Arata can sleep well only in the car of his father, Atsushi. *1

Particularly, what seems to be significant about Atsushi is the words he told Arata in the car: “Your Psycho-Pass is――. This is all to protect you from the ――.”

When the word “Psycho-Pass” used in this grammar, it is related to personal “Psycho-Pass,” so Arata may have some secret in his “Psycho-Pass.”

For example, why does Arata’s Hue not become cloudy when he uses his ability ―“Special-A-Class Mentalist Skill” ー?

It can be considered that the Hue does not become cloudy because Arata is an “a Criminally Asymptomatic (免罪体質 Menzai Taishitsu).”

But if so, aren’t there too many people who is the “Criminally Asymptomatic (免罪体質 Menzai Taishitsu)”...?

We need other information regarding the ability of Arata.

Ⅴ. Gods

ⅰ. Bifrost

f:id:zaikakotoo:20191027230016j:plain

by "PSYCHO-PASS3" ep1 ©サイコパス製作委員会

“Bifrost” is a rainbow bridge that connects the human world and the god world in Norse mythology.

The three members of “Bifrost” ―Shizuka Homura, Haruki Shirogane, and Kyoko Saionji― enjoy money games as if they were gods while watching the movements of “dogs” and “fox” running in the human world.

They buy and sell stocks through “Round Robin,” and the woman said, “To prevent Sibyl’s interference and protect Bifrost’s interests is our duty.”

What is their aim?

ⅱ. Is there a Separation of powers in the world of “PSYCHO-PASS”?

I think that “Bifrost” is playing the role of the judicial deterrent of the Sibyl System, as the parliament (legislature) can judge judges in impeachment trials, or the cabinet (executive government) has the right to appoint judges.

In the anime “PSYCHO-PASS,” you may have heard the names of various ministries such as the Ministry of Welfare and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. However, haven’t you heard the name of “National Diet”...?

The world in “PSYCHO-PASS” is like a dictatorship of the Sibyl System, and I think it would not be strange that there is a presence to prevent the dictatorship.

In any case, “Bifrost” seems to be a big scale system that is equal to or more than the Sibyl System.

ⅲ. “Bureau Chief Hosorogi”

f:id:zaikakotoo:20191027230011j:plain

By "PSYCHO-PASS3" ep1 ©サイコパス製作委員会

In addition to “Bifrost,” in the world of “PSYCHO-PASS” Sibyl System is also like a “God.”
By the way, speaking of the Sibyl System, the Bureau Chief’s name has changed from “Kasei” to “Hosorogi.”
As the cause, as mentioned above, the Bureau Chief may have been killed in “that incident.”
If so, why was the Bureau Chief killed?

Even if killed, the Bureau Chief’s contents should remain the Sibyl system.
In other words, even if the director killed, the entire Sibyl System should not be killed. So, killing the Bureau Chief means killing “someone” that was in the Bureau Chief’s brain at that time. (Of course, there may be a possibility where they don’t die by taking a copy of their mind.)
Who is the content of Sibyl that Tsunemori wants to kill until then?
As expected, if possible, would it be a heterogeneous entity that would have a significant impact on Sibyl?
However, many questions remain. Why Tsunemori went to such high-risk behavior? Why is the Bureau Chief killed even though her content remains Sibyl System? etc.
Of course, the Bureau Chief killing is just a guess, so there is no choice but to keep an eye on the following stories.

Ⅳ. Why did Japan “open the country”?

I have another question about Sibyl.
Why did Japan “open the country”?
I understand the feelings of the refugees. It would be natural to want to escape from the world of conflict and live in Japan, where it is relatively safe.

However, where is Sibyl’s aim to open of the country?
In the real world, there are various reasons for affirming diversity, stopping the declining birthrate, securing a low-wage workforce, or purely for mercy…
But in the world of “PSYCHO-PASS,” what is the merit of accepting immigrants and abandoning the security that Japan has kept in isolation?
In this respect, there must be an essential theme of “PSYCHO-PASS 3”.

Will the Sibyl System climb up to the presence of “God” in the world of “PSYCHO-PASS”?
Or, as the word “Sibyl” comes, will it stay in the servant of “God” as the etymology of the word “sibyl”?

Ⅵ. Conclusion

Sibyl vs. Tsunemori, System vs. Human beings, Justice vs. Justice ... if this conflict is the basis of “PSYCHO-PASS,” is “3” following the conflict?
Is the “opening of the country” a new step towards “God” by Sibyl?
And has Tsunemori been imprisoned as a result of “human” justice?

“Dog,” “Fox,” “Wolf,” and “God” …actors has lined up.
Will “dog” be able to capture “fox” and “wolf,” or will they be turned into stones by “God”?
Now we will witness that fate―

This time, I wrote about my review and analysis about “PSYCHO-PASS 3”.
I would be pleased if I enjoyed the animation “PSYCHO-PASS 3” with the people who read this.
Thank you for reading! See you next time!
